The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has rejected Jamaat-e-Islami's petition to hold a rally in the capital on Monday.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Investigation) Harun-or-Rashid said the intelligence units are keeping an eye on how the banned party's members are gathering in Dhaka.
The DMP additional commissioner told on Sunday: “No one should cause any harm to public properties in the name of illegal assembly. To prevent any kind of untoward incident, it is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to be proactive in these matters.”
As Monday is a working day, police will be on high alert to make sure any kind of undesirable situation does not take place, he added.
Harun-or-Rashid also said that the police will take legal action if Jamaat activists damage property in the name of illegal processions and gatherings.
The police official said the Jamaat-e-Islami members have been bringing out sudden processions in the morning or evening for a long time. They also attack the police in some instances.
“On Monday, they want to hold a public rally. We don't know what the real purpose is. We will monitor every place,” he added.
He also said that the law enforcement agencies are investigating to find out the reason behind Jamaat's sudden interest in holding a rally.
