Police on Friday arrested three people, including the son of Noakhali BNP leader Abdur Rahman, who is accused of making derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, over a prior case.
Police claimed they were arrested when they conducted a raid to detain Abdur Rahman, also the chairman of Chatarpaiya Union Parishad of Senbagh upazila of Noakhali and joint general secretary of upazila unit BNP.
The arrestees are Nazmul Hasan Hridoy, 23, son of the BNP leader, Ismail Hossain Rakib, 22, and Junaid Hossain, 24.
Abdur Rahman has been allegedly on the run since a video of the incident went viral online.
When asked about the matter, Officer-in-Charge of Senbagh police station Iqbal Hossain Patwari said all the arrestees have cases filed against them. “We are conducting operations to arrest Abdur Rahman.”
Locals said during a party meeting on Thursday, Abdur Rahman made several derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He said the US welcomed Sheikh Hasina with a garland of shoes, while other prime ministers are welcomed with flowers. “I think, now Sheikh Hasina does not even think of BNP as an opposition party, Sheikh Hasina thinks of America as the opposition party.”
A 1:58-minute video of his speech caught the attention of the district administration, and since then police have been trying to detain him.
