Ganajagaran Mancha and several student organizations on Monday called a dawn-to-dusk hartal for Tuesday, saying the tribunal’s verdict delivered against Ghulam Azam was too lenient. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islam has announced a hartal on the same day, demanding the release of the ex-Jamaat guru.
SM Shuvo, president of the left-leaning student body Bangladesh Chatra Union, announced the countrywide shutdown on behalf of 10 student organisations, from a press conference held at Shahbag intersection in the city.
On the other hand, Jamaat, in a statement signed by the party’s Acting Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan, called upon the shutdown rejecting tribunal’s verdict against Ghulam Azam and demanding his release.
Student leader Shuvo urged the students, workers and people of all walks to join and observe tomorrow’s hartal protesting against the “lenient verdict” handed down to the top war criminal.
Maruf Billah Tanmoy, president of the Dhaka University chapter of Bangladesh Chhatra Union confirmed that Chhatra Union, Chhatra Federation, Chhatra Front, Chhatra Moitree, Chhatra Oikya Forum, Biplobi Chhatra Moitree, Chhatra Andolon, and JSD-Chhatra League had jointly made the decision to enforce Tuesday's hartal.
