Ashraf says resignation rumours are ‘baseless’

Update : 14 Jul 2013, 05:43 AM

Ruling Awami League’s General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam has dismissed rumours that he will be resigning from his party post, calling the media speculation “baseless” and “false.”

While talking to reporters at the entrance of the Jatiya Sangsad at noon, he confirmed that the news about his resignation is absolutely false.

“A certain quarter is spreading such propaganda to achieve political gains. I didn't resign from my post,” Ashraf said.

Ashraf spoke to the media for the first time following the publication of news stories that claimed his resignation from the party's general secretary post. Ashraf was absent from the media spotlight until this point despite the party's fifth consecutive defeat taking place recently at the mayoral polls.

Ruling Awami League sources said some influential party leaders came down hard on General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam for not playing any vital role during campaigning in the five recent city polls that were held during the last month.

Awami League-supported candidates conceded heavy defeats in the Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barisal, Khulna and Gazipur city polls.
