Quader: What Prothom Alo did was a crime, not a mistake

Prothom Alo usually serves a vested quarter through its reports, Obaidul Quader claims

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday said of a report by Prothom Alo that was published on Independence Day was a criminal offence, not a mistake.

"Many are saying it was a mistake. I would like to tell them that it was not a simple mistake to joke about the achievement and status of 52 years of the Bangali nation on Independence Day. It was also a criminal offence,” Obaidul Quader told a joint meeting of his party.

Prothom Alo tried to incite frustration and anger in the minds of the youth by presenting false news to the nation to carry out a conspiracy of their masters, said Quader, also road transport and bridges minister.

Asking whether Prothom Alo's action on Independence Day is not an act of destructive conspiracy against the nation, he said: “Independence Day is a unique day to spread patriotism among the young generation. However, was not the news, published on this day, aimed at setting a politically selected agenda, denying the achievement of the great Liberation War?”

He also complained that traditionally the newspaper works to serve the purpose of a vested quarter.

Prothom Alo has always tried to create a political vacuum by publishing news against the Awami League, Bangabandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government, he added.

Citing examples of conspiracies, he said: "The reports that have come from various media and organizations around the world protesting the filing of a case against an editor and a reporter... They are very clever. Their international links are very strong. But they have spread the news that a case has been filed against them for reporting on the rise in commodity prices.”

Quader further said: “Journalists are not our enemies. But Prothom Alo is doing just that. We think of BNP as our opponent, BNP as our enemy. Prothom Alo is our enemy. Each has an editorial policy. Prothom Alo's enmity with Awami League is supporting the politics of BNP. This is the reality of today.”

The Awami League leader also highlighted the things that his government has done for journalists.

Sheikh Hasina's government and Awami League leaders personally are very sincere in the welfare of journalists, he added further.

The Awami League general secretary said: “Did we make a mistake by making Bangladesh digital? That digital medium is now being used against us. They are doing this very cleverly.”
