Terming the victory in the Gazipur polls a verdict of the people and democracy, BNP leader Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain urged the government on Sunday to introduce a bill in parliament and to restore caretaker government in order to maintain free, fair and credible national elections.
“The elections for change of government cannot be held under party-government. Such elections won’t be acceptable. Restore caretaker government system, else you [government] will forfeit your existence,” he said at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.
Accusing the government of planning to hold the next general elections without main opposition BNP, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf warned that such a suicidal step would result in dire consequences for the ruling party, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ganotantrik Sangsad arranged the discussion with its president M Shahid Ullah Mazumdar in the chair.
Jatiya Press Club President Kamal Uddin Sabuj, Dhaka City BNP Member Secretary Abdus Salam, former BNP MP Helen Zerin Khan and BNP National Executive Member Rafique Sikdar, among others, were present.
Dr Khandaker Mosharraf said the conscious citizens of the country gave their verdict against corruption, misrule and killings of innocent people through their votes.
“People have rejected the government. The government should realise it. It’s also a victory of our ongoing movement for non-party, neutral government. It’s now proved that the people want national elections under a non-party, neutral government,” he said.
The BNP standing committee member said the international community has also lost trust in the government. The US government has suspended GSP benefits for Bangladesh in the US market and the World Bank stepped back from financing the Padma Bridge.
