MA Mannan, the opposition-backed mayoral candidate in the maiden Gazipur City Corporation polls, has defeated his ruling party-supported opponent Azmat Ullah Khan by a huge margin.
The result of 392 centres has been declared. As per official announcement of the election commission, M A Mannan, the candidate backed by the BNP-led opposition, bagged 365,444 votes while Azmat Ullah, the pro-Awami League candidate and immediate-past mayor of Tongi municipality, got 258,867 votes.

The voting started in a festive mood at 8am at the country’s largest city corporation, in terms of area, comprised of the erstwhile Gazipur and Tongi municipalities. It ended at 4pm.
The city corporation has a total of 1,026,938 voters – 527,777 male and 499,161 female.
A total of 76 ward councillors will be elected in these polls of the newly-formed city corporation.
