BNP preparing for major attacks, Quader says

BNP should be banned for lying and conspiring, Obaidul Quader says

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has alleged that the opposition BNP is preparing for major attacks and sabotage across Bangladesh.

"Militancy in the country seems to be inactive but the BNP is active in disguise. Detectives have such information," Quader, who is also road transport and bridges minister, said during an exchange of views with reporters after a meeting at Setu Bhaban in Dhaka on Thursday.

Quader said that the BNP does not need to rescue democracy again as democracy was freed long ago under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He said that the BNP should be banned for lying and conspiracy, not the Awami League.

The Awami League leader said his party will remain on the streets to protect people's lives and properties and continue their mass campaign and peace rally until the general election.

He said the Awami League does not call counter-programs as his party has no desire to clash with the BNP.

Before this, a board meeting of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority took place at Setu Bhaban. The meeting decided that only the president will be exempt from paying tolls on all bridges, including the Padma Bridge.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday urged the Awami League to refrain from holding counter-programs on the days of the BNP and other opposition parties' programs.

“Please do not hold any counter-programs and obstruct those. The Awami League and the government have to take responsibility if any untoward situation is created for this reason,” the BNP leader said.
