Female voters heavily outnumbered male voters in the first hours of the Gazipur City Corporation polls.
The queues of the women were much longer than those of the men.
Locals said the number of men was likely to increase as the day progressed.
They said women had arrived in greater numbers because it was easier for them to take a break from household chores in the morning rather than later in the day.
Aklima Aktar, 26, a resident of ward 41, said the turn out of female voters had been high in the morning because men were busy with work, while it was easier for the women to come to the polling centres.
Anjuman Ara, 38, from ward 20, came to vote with her mother-in-law and daughter.
She said she had come to vote for the person she believed would be able to solve the crises they were facing.
She alleged that her locality was one of the worst areas in Gazipur in terms of road, sewerage and development activities.
