Govt out to manipulate GCC polls: Fakhrul

Update : 05 Jul 2013, 01:08 PM

BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday alleged that the government was against the deployment of army in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls as they are out to manipulate it.

“The government does not want troops-deployment in Gazipur (city corporation area) since they have planned to rig the polls,” Fakhrul said while addressing a rally in the capital.

The maiden election to GCC is scheduled to be held tomorrow [Saturday].

Criticising Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed for his remarks that BNP wants army deployment in the polls to make the forces controversial, Fakhrul said: “It’s a matter of doubt why their [AL] sympathy over the army has increased so much all on a sudden.”

“Those, who always criticise BNP and the army, and call BNP a party born in cantonment, are now showing sympathy to the army,” he added.

The opposition spokesperson also said: “Top terrors from across the country have been assembled in Gazipur, and crores of taka are being distributed among the voters there.”

To put an end to such misdeeds, Fakhrul reiterated their demand for deployment of army in GCC polls.

Issuing a note of warning, the BNP leader said: “The movement to oust the government will be launched from Gazipur if any attempt is made to rig the elections.”

Swadhinata Forum, a pro-opposition body, organised the programme at the Jatiya Press Club.
