Sixty eminent citizens, including current and former professors of various universities of Bangladesh, have demanded the release of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from jail.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the signatories have demanded the BNP leader's quick release to strengthen and accelerate the process of democracy in Bangladesh, BNP media wing member Shayrul Kabir Khan said.
The concerned Dhaka and Jahangirnagar university professors, economist, politicians and civil society members also expressed concern over Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's health condition.
They noted in the statement that they came to know of Fakhrul's condition from his family.
They urged that he needed to go abroad for treatment as per his physician's advice, reports Bangla Tribune.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was arrested from his residence without any warrant on December 9. He has not been granted bail so far, reads the statement.
The signatories include -- Prof Emeritus Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Prof Anwarullah Chowdhury, Prof Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, politician Badruddin Umar, former Bangladesh Bank governor Saleh Uddin Ahmed, former World Health Organization regional adviser Mazharul Haque and others.
