Former military ruler HM Ershad’s Jatiya Party, a key ally of the incumbent Grand Alliance government, will remain with the Awami League and contest the next general elections under the banner of the alliance, AL Joint General Secretary Mahabub-Ul-Alam Hanif said yesterday.
“May be Ershad is announcing to quit the Grand Alliance to encourage his supporters and increase votes. It may be his political tactic,” he said during a press conference at the party president’s Dhanmondi office.
Hanif, also the special assistant to the prime minister, alleged that the main opposition BNP had been spreading propaganda centring the Gazipur elections, to mislead the people.
He asked the people of Gazipur to cast their votes in favour of the alliance-backed candidate Azmat Ullah Khan.
The AL leader claimed that the Election Commission was conducting its activities independently, and hence, a free and fair election would be held in Gazipur.
Hanif also criticised the BNP chief for her article in Washington Times saying: “Khaleda Zia wrote the article in Washington Times for scrapping the facilities [Bangladesh enjoys from the US].
