All seven Members of Parliament (MPs) of BNP tendered their resignation to Speaker of Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Sunday as part of their anti-government movement with a 10-point demand that includes dissolution of parliament.
The BNP MPs submitted their resignation letters at 12:20pm, Mohammad Siraj, MP of Bogra-6, told UNB.
In this regard, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said that she has accepted the resignation letters from the MPs.
“They have submitted seven applications to me, but only five of them were physically present. Those five seats are now vacant,” she said.
The speaker later mentioned that she would examine the last two resignation letters before making a decision.
After the resignation, reserved seat MP Rumeen Farhana told media that BNP is set to hold another mass rally on December 24.
“All political parties have been called on December 24 to demand the resignation of this government,” she added.
Rumeen also mentioned that BNP on their 10-point demand asked for the dissolution of the current national parliament, and the resignation of the ruling party.
“With all those demands from the party, seven of us (MPs) have also resigned from the parliament to express our solidarity,” she noted.
The seven lawmakers are Md Zahidur Rahman from Thakurgaon-3, Md Mosharof Hosen from Bogra-4, Gulam Mohammad Siraj from Bogra-6, Md Harunur Rashid from Chapainawabganj-3, Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan from Brahmanbaria-2 and reserved seat MP Rumeen Farhana.
Among them, Md Harunur Rashid of Chapainawabganj-3, who is now in Australia and ailing MP of Brahmanbaria-2 Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan submitted their resignation through Rumeen Farhana.
The MPs sent their resignation through an e-mail on Saturday.
BNP on Saturday unveiled a 10-point charter of demands from the Golapbagh rally aimed at unseating the government through a simultaneous movement.
