Just like the opposition BNP, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a 10-point demand and declared a mass rally on December 24.
The announcement was made by Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman in front of other central leaders of the party in Dhaka on Saturday.
The Jamaat Ameer later mentioned that the press conference was the only way to save the country from today's dire situation, and establish a government chosen by the people of Bangladesh.
Their demands include--
1. Resignation of the ruling government by dissolving the current national parliament, and
formation of a neutral caretaker government n line with Sections Kha, Ga, and Gha of article 58 of the constitution that was in place in 1996.
2. The caretaker government must form a neutral Election Commission, that will ensure a level-playing field for all parties; the use of EVMs and party symbols in local government elections will be annulled.
3. Convictions of all the opposition leaders and activists, including Khaleda Zia, Nayebe Ameer Delwar Hossain Saidi, journalists, and religious scholars will have to be scrapped.
4. Jamaat office should be opened immediately, and freedom of expression should be ensured.
5. All the black laws, including the Digital Security Act, 2018, Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, and the Special Powers Act, 1974 must be revoked.
6. The anti-people decision to increase the price of public services including electricity, energy, gas, and water needs to be cancelled.
7. A commission must be formed to identify the corruption in the banking and energy sectors and share market in the last 15 years.
8. All the victims of enforced disappearances in the last 15 years should be rescued and those responsible for extrajudicial killings must be identified and punished.
9. Law enforcement, administration and judiciary function independently without government interference should be ensured.
10. National unity should be built by stopping border killings and protecting the independence and sovereignty of the country.
Earlier in the day, BNP also announced a 10-point demand, including the demand for the resignation of the ruling government and the dissolution of the current national parliament on Saturday.
BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain announced the points at 4pm from the BNP's Dhaka divisional mass meeting at Golapbag Ground in Dhaka.
The party's divisional rally in the city began on Saturday morning, with the presence of thousands of leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies.
The rally began around 11am at the city's Golapbagh Ground.
