Addressing the Awami League, Afroza Abbas, wife of BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas and President of Women's Party, said that they (Awami League) thought that arresting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas would not allow the rally to succeed.
“The government is preventing us from holding the rally. But they gather whenever they want. BNP has never accepted failure and BNP will never be defeated,” she added.
She made the remark while addressing the BNP's Dhaka divisional rally on Saturday.
She said: “Awami League activists came in front of our house and threatened that they will remove the skin of Mirza Abbas.”
Fakhrul and Abbas were picked up by detectives from their home at around 3am on Friday. They were arrested on charges of planning and inciting an attack on law enforcers at Naya Paltan.
Earlier, police arrested several senior leaders of the BNP on Wednesday, hours after violent clashes between the police and opposition supporters left one dead and around 20 others injured in Naya Paltan.
BNP leaders blamed the police for excesses and alleged that the government had stage-managed the clashes that rocked the area around 3pm onwards to foil its mass rally slated for December 10.
