BNP demands probe into rumours of Gazipur city polls

Update : 02 Jul 2013, 04:02 AM

Main opposition BNP Monday demanded that the Election Commission looks into claims by various media reports that the returning officer of Gazipur City Corporation poll was engaging ruling party men in the voting process.

“Media reports published claim 392 partisan officials have been appointed in the voting process. The Election Commission has to act immediately and investigate the authenticity of the claim,” the party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at the inauguration of an online newspaper in the capital.

The party spokesperson also questioned the Election Commission’s neutrality alleging that it was not taking any step against the Awami League-backed candidate, who he claims, was violating the electoral code of conduct.

“The way independent candidate Jahangir withdrew his candidature was not right. He stepped down after being pressured by the government chief [prime minister] but the commission did not take any action. So, it is not possible to hold any fair elections under this commission.”

He also expressed fear that the ruling party might rig the polls as they have already realised their defeats in other city corporation polls. “We want to urge the Election Commission to deploy army in the polls.”
