Former BNP lawmaker Nadim Mostafa was arrested from his house in Pathanpara area in Rajshahi city on Tuesday.
A team of DB police nabbed Nadim Mostafa, also the former president of Rajshahi district BNP, from his residence at 12pm.
Spokesperson of Rajshahi district police and Additional Superintendent of Police Md Iftekhar Alam confirmed the information, adding that the former MP was arrested in connection with a murder case filed with Puthia police station on January 5, 2015.
A pedestrian, named Abdul Majid, was killed during a clash among BNP leaders and activists at Baneshwar Bazar in Puthia upazila. Nadim Mostafa's name was on the arrest warrant, said the police official.
However, Rajshahi district BNP Convener Abu Saeed Chand alleged that police have launched an operation to arrest BNP leaders and activists to thwart the divisional mass gathering on December 3. Nadim Mostafa was arrested as a part of that, he said.
There is a tension brewing between in Rajshahi centring on the divisional mass rally of BNP. Police have filed 19 cases against 790 leaders and activists of BNP under the Explosive Substances Act for conspiring to create chaos and instability.
“The police are filing these fabricated cases to disrupt the rally. However, the mass gathering will not be thwarted by any means,” Abu Saeed Chand said.
“Hundreds of people have been accused anonymously by naming few BNP leaders in each case. Although no one has been arrested in these cases yet, we fear police will start arresting our leaders and activists before the mass rally,” he added.
However, spokesperson of Rajshahi district police and Additional Superintendent of Police Md Iftekhar Alam denied these allegations saying legal actions are being taken according to the facts.
