The Parliament will not stop functioning even if the BNP MPs resign, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said.
“Resigning from the Parliament is BNP's decision, not the government's. The Parliament will not stop functioning even if they resign,” he told reporters at Dhaka's Dhanmondi office on Sunday.
He was responding to a statement made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir about his party's MPs resigning from the Parliament if they see fit.
The road transport and bridges minister also said that Awami League does not believe in counter-programs.
Awami League is organizing several programs now due to the upcoming national conference, and those are not in any way related to BNP's rallies, the minister added.
On Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said MPs from his party are ready to resign from the current Parliament as their main goal is to restore democracy by ousting the Awami League government.
“We would like to straightly say that no election will be held in the country under Sheikh Hasina and without a caretaker government. Our only demand is the resignation of this regime.” He told a massive rally in Rangpur.
The BNP leader also said the government must dissolve the Parliament and hand over power to a caretaker government.
“Our MPs Harun, Rumeen and Zahid are ready to resign (from Parliament) as per the directive of the party. The government must hand over power to a caretaker government which will form a new Election Commission and a fresh election will be held under it,” he said.
