A crucial decision on the 22nd National Council of the ruling Awami League is likely to come following a meeting of the party's Central Working Committee (ALCWC) on Friday.
The council is likely to take place in December this year as the present committee's tenure will expire in the same month.
Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to chair the meeting at her official residence Ganabhaban.
Senior leaders of the party said that dates for the councils of the Jubo Mohila League, Mohila Awami League, Tnati League and Chhatra League may also be decided at Friday's meeting.
“Political and organizational issues will be discussed in the meeting. Council dates for the AL and its associate bodies may also be fixed in the meeting,” Abdur Rahman, a presidium member of the AL, told Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
He said as part of preparations for the central council, the AL will form sub-committees, a subject which may also be discussed at the meeting.
A leader of the central committee of the ruling party told this newspaper that the AL is planning to organize divisional rallies and programs to counter the BNP's ongoing rallies across the country. Such issues are likely to come up today.
Party insiders said that the AL wants to organize programs in the capital Dhaka and nearby districts, including Naryanganaj, Gazipur and Tangail, in the coming weeks.
