The ruling Awami League is going to mount a campaign to counter “religious propaganda” against the government in the Gazipur City Corporation polls.
The party assistant secretaries will spearhead the campaign starting Friday, in every mosque in Gazipur and Tongi, as they think religious propaganda is spread mainly before and after the Jummah prayer.
AL leaders will start the campaign on Friday by distributing leaflets among devotees after the Jummah Prayer, describing the development activities, focusing on developments in religious sectors, taken by the incumbent government.
The decision came from two separate meetings with assistant secretaries and some members of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote at Sheikh Hasina’s political office in Dhanmondi.
AL leaders Obaidul Quader, Mahabub-Ul-Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, were present at the meeting.
An assistant secretary who attended the meeting told the Dhaka Tribune that the party decided that its women leaders and activists would visit and conduct a house-to-house campaign in the newly formed GCC area to ensure victory of the party-supported candidate, Azmatullah Khan.
AL leaders have identified religious propaganda as an important factor behind the defeats of the AL-backed candidates in the four, recently held, city corporation elections.
This is why the party is going to launch campaign to counter religious propaganda, said Hasina.
In the meeting, AL leaders asked the assistant secretaries to visit Gazipur in phases and start campaigning in favour of the AL-backed candidate.
Cultural personalities Ramendu Majumder, Jhuna Chowdhury, Golam Quddus, Jhuna Chowdhury, singer Mamtaz Begum, among others, were present at the meeting.
