An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir was beaten to death on Monday night, allegedly by unidentified Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists over previous enmity at Kulashar village in Chowddagram upazila.
Local unit of Chhatra Shibir, Tuesday, called a half-day hartal in the district for Thursday protesting the killing of the man.
The deceased was Abdul Aziz, 25, Shibir activist of Feni Government College unit.
Iqbal Hossain, sub-inspector of Chowddagram police station, said there had been long-standing enmity between Aziz and some BCL activists in the village.
Police said a group of unidentified people picked up Aziz from a mosque at Paduar Bazar and took him to Kulasa village sometime around 8pm and beat him up. Local people recovered him from the area around 10pm.
Aziz was rushed to the Comilla Medical College Hospital where he died around11:45pm. A case was filed in connection with the incident.
ATM Masum, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Alkora Union unit, claimed Aziz was killed by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.
Monir Ahmed, president, Shibir City Unit of Comilla, made the hartal call after the namaz-e-janaza of Aziz, which held on the premises of a local madrasah in Chouddagram upazila headquarters in the afternoon.
He said they will bring out processions in all the upazilas of the district today to protest the killing of their man.
