Jahangir Alam, Awami League’s renegade mayoral aspirant for Gazipur City Corporation election, was found ‘admitted’ in Apollo Hospital in Dhaka Saturday night.
The party’s Presidium Member and Communication Minister Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary and State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and Jatiya Sangsad Whip Mirza Azam met Jahangir Saturday night.
Obaidul told reporters: Jahangir Alam will start campaigning for the party-backed candidate Azmat Ullah Khan.
Jahangir has ‘decided’ to withdraw his candidature from the polls following a lengthy meeting with the party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on June 18.
AL leadership is viewing this election as a means to recover after its massive defeat in polls at four city corporations on June 15.
Voting for the newly created Gazipur City Corporation is due on July 6.
