Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Saturday called upon the leader of the opposition to come back to the path of democracy by discarding the concept of the caretaker government system.
“Please come back to the path of democracy and the next polls will be held in the way the other countries of the world stage elections,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, said this in her introductory speech at a view-exchange meeting with grassroots leaders of Rangpur district unit of the party at her official Ganobhaban residence this morning, reports BSS.
The Prime Minister said the politicians, teachers, students, businessmen--none could escape the torture and repression of the past caretaker government.
She said the previous caretaker government also sent Khaleda Zia to jail. So who has given her the guarantee that she won’t be thrown into jail again if the caretaker government comes to power again? she posed a question.
“The past caretaker government clung to power for two years instead of three months. And is there any guarantee that the caretaker government this time would hold polls? There are some learned persons like in the past who would say again that the caretaker government could stay in power till doomsday,” she said
The Prime Minister expressed her firm determination that the next election would be held in a free, fair and neutral manner. “There was no history of Awami League to steal vote, rather the party returned back the voting rights to the people which the BNP snatched from them,” she said.
She said there is no need for the caretaker government as all the elections held during the present government’s tenure including the recently held four city corporation polls were staged in a free, fair, neutral and peaceful manner.
