Hasina assigns Amu, Tofael to bolster AL

Update : 22 Jun 2013, 03:25 AM

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister, has assigned party’s senior leaders, ignored for years and have been out of any key posts, to bring in dynamism in the party.

The decision came after the party’s debacle in four city corporation polls.

AL leaders considered the city polls results as ominous for the party just before the parliamentary elections and hence it has taken the steps to boost up the organisation.

Hasina instructed the party lawmakers from Dhaka City in this regard on Thursday.

She held meeting with most of the MPs at her parliament office on Thursday evening during the session and asked them to take all-out preparation for the next national elections.

The AL president directed the party’s veteran leaders, Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, now the members of party’s advisory council, to monitor Dhaka City AL.

AL Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim will also assist the two leaders.

“Sheikh Hasina asked them to make the party stronger in Dhaka City within a shortest possible time,” a ruling party lawmaker quoted Hasina as saying requesting anonymity.

The meeting was attended by Tofail Ahmed, Dhaka City unit acting president MA Aziz and General Secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, ruling party MPs Sahara Khatun, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin, AKM Rahmatullah, Kamal Ahmed Majumder, Asaduzzaman Khan, Mizanur Rahman Khan, Habibur Rahman Mollah, Sanjida Khanam, Nasrul Hamid and Elias Uddin Mollah.

Hasina asked the Dhaka City MPs to take preparation for the next parliamentary polls stressing the need for win in Dhaka:

“The party who wins in capital forms the government and therefore it is very important to take preparation from now on.”

Earlier, following the defeat in the city polls Hasina at Monday’s cabinet meeting asked Obaidul Kader to monitor party activities across the country and regularly attend the party’s Dhanmondi office.

The PM also asked the city MPs to join the party campaign in Gazipur City Corporation polls: “I do not want to see any sad face after the Gazipur election.”

The party president also talked about the committee of AL Dhaka city unit. She told the meeting to form three committees in Dhaka city. Those are: Dhaka City North and South units. Another committee will be formed to monitor the two.

All the three committees will enjoy the status of district committee, meeting sources said.

The last conference of Dhaka City AL was held on December 26, 2012.
