She was arrested from her Sudha Sadan residence in Dhanmondi on this day in 2007

The ruling Awami League and its affiliate bodies are set to observe the imprisonment day of party chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday in a befitting manner.

The party has taken various programmes, including discussions, milad and doa mahfils, to mark the day maintaining Covid-19 health guidelines and social distancing, BSS reports.

Then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina was arrested from her Sudha Sadan residence in Dhanmondi on July 16, 2007 during the military-backed caretaker government, which assumed power in the political changeover of January 11, 2007, amid a ban on politics. She was subsequently implicated in two dozen cases, filed for corruption and instigating political violence.

Sheikh Hasina was kept in a sub-jail set up on the premises of the parliament complex.

As she fell sick during her captivity, demands were raised then from different quarters including the Awami League and its associate bodies for her release and to send her abroad for better medical treatment.

The caretaker government released Sheikh Hasina from jail after nearly 11 months, on June 11, 2008.

On the other hand, the immediate-past prime minister, Khelada Zia, was arrested on September 3 the same year as part of the government’s “minus-two formula” and its plan to facilitate the formation of a king’s party.

According to senior government officials, both Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia were given a number of options to exit politics gracefully. They were arrested for declining the offers.
