AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, president of BikalpaDhara Bangladesh (BDP), has criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent remarks on the caretaker government issue in parliament, terming it as a challenge to the democratic rights ofopposition parties.
The BDP chief suggested holding general elections under a caretaker government to resolvethe political instability in the country and create a scope for all political parties to participate in the polls, Badruddoza said yesterday in a press release.
Earlier, during the ongoing budget session, the prime minister played down the need for any unconstitutional regime to hold free and fair elections. She added that no elections will takeplace unless the opposition withdraws its demand for the restoration of a caretaker government system.
Reacting to Hasina’s remarks, the former head of state said the cancellation of the caretaker system will have an ominous effect on the incumbent government, opposition parties and the people of the country.
He added that an elected government remains in power for five years, and after the end of her tenure, Hasina will no longer be a prime minister or a member of parliament.
