The mayoral candidates in Gazipur City Corporation elections, scheduled for July 6, have been allocated symbols on Tuesday.
Returning officer for the GCC elections Md Motiar Rahman allocated the symbols among the candidates. The ruling 14-party-backed Ajmat Ullah Khan was given “pen-inkpot” as his electoral symbol while 18-party BNP-backed MA Mannan was given the “television” symbol, the AL rival candidate Jahangir Alam contesting the polls under the banner of Sammilito Nagorik Committee was given ‘pineapple’ , Mezba Uddin Rubel Sarker from Jatiyatabadi Prajanma Dal was given ‘Duck’ , Md Aman Ullah was given ‘ Lock’ and Rina Sultana was given ‘Butterfly’.
The mayoral candidates began campaign immediately after the allocation of symbols. The distribution of symbol for the post of 446 general candidates against 57 wards and 126 reserved female seats against 19 reserved wards was on process till filling this report at 12pm.
Assistant Returning Officer Md Hasanuzzaman said according to the electoral code of conduct the aspirants would not be allowed to paste posters on any building, wall, fence, vehicles, electric poles or trees. Besides, no coloured posters, billboards or stickers are also allowed.
Of the 57 Wards, Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will be used in four polling centres at Ward number 25.
As many as 1,026,964 voters -- 499,181 males and 527,783 females – will be able to exercise their right to elect their mayor as well as 57 councillors and 19 reserved (women) councillors. On January 16 this year, the local government division published a gazette announcing the Gazipur City Corporation comprising of Gazipur and Tongi municipalities in line with clause 34 (1) (A) of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act-2009. July 6 will be a public holiday in Gazipur so that voters can exercise their right to vote in the GCC polls.
