Update : 17 Jun 2013, 08:21 AM

Khulna mayor-elect Moniruzzaman Moni Sunday said the city corporation polls were a clear sign of people’s no-confidence in the incumbent government and their verdict for a change.

He said the results were also the people’s verdict for the restoration of the caretaker government system.

“The people of Khunla city gave their mandate against the misuse of power and corruption,” the former general secretary of city BNP told reporters in response to a query.

He vowed to take every measure necessary for the welfare of Khulna city residents, which includes forming investigation teams to find out previous corruption, removing water-logging, freeing the city from drug, developing road communication and reopening mills and factories.

“People want change in the top post of the city corporation and the election results reflected their desire,” he said.

The newly elected mayor was talking to some reporters at his main electioneering camp on Haji Mohasin Road in the city.

Terming the results a historical verdict by the people, Moni said people of Khulna gave this mandate as expected development had not taken place in the city in the previous years.

“The city corporation election was my challenge and a large number of people made sacrifice to meet that challenge,” said Moni, who was involved in leftist politics. He expressed gratitude to Khulna city residents for electing him as the mayor.

He was also thankful to the BNP chairperson and other senior BNP leaders for their directives in different issues.
