EC to deploy BGB and Coast Guard in four city corporation polls

Update : 10 Jun 2013, 04:44 AM

The Election Commission (EC) has decided to deploy Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet, and Coast Guard in Barisal to strengthen the law and order situation during the upcoming city corporation polls.

Election Commissioner Md Shah Newaz on Sunday told reporters: “We have decided to deploy Coast Guard in Barisal City Corporation. We will also deploy BGB in the other three city corporations, if necessary. We kept BGB as the reserve force for maintaining the law and order situation during these city corporation elections.”

About violating the electoral codes of conduct by the candidates in four city corporations, the commissioner said the EC was yet to get any allegations in this regard. If any specific allegation comes to the EC, it would take stern action against them, he added.

The commissioner, however, said: “If any allegations are proven regarding returning officers’ negligence in duty, the EC would also take actions against the returning officers. If necessary, those returning officers would be discharged from their posts.”

About the by-elections in upazila parishads, Shah Newaz said there was no possibility to hold the upazila parishad polls before the upcoming Eid.
