Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Saturday urged the main opposition BNP to resubmit its adjournment motion over the caretaker government system for discussion in parliament, reported UNB.
“The nation gained a measure of hope after BNP had submitted its adjournment motion. But it later withdrew it at the directive of its chairperson Khaleda Zia. It proves they don’t want discussion, and want to grab power through conspiracies,” he said.
Syed Ashraf, also the LGRD minister, made the remarks while addressing a convention of progressive democratic activists at the Institute of Engineers in the city.
“I urge the opposition to resubmit the adjournment motion to the Speaker to pave the way for holding discussions. We can assure you we won’t turn down any constructive proposal by taking advantage of our majority in the House,” the ruling party spokesperson said.
He then reflected on post-budget reactions, trashing the Centre for Policy Dialogue’s (CPD) remarks over the budget proposal, and criticising BNP for its failure to deliver any constructive suggestions on the matter.
He observed the main opposition has failed to come up with any proposal on the budget for fiscal 2013-14, with regard to making any important changes or additions to it.
“BNP’s criticism was limited to only commenting that the budget is ‘a big, beautiful balloon’. Due to their failure to make constructive observations, NGOs have become the main opponent of a political government, which is regrettable. It shouldn’t have happened,” he said.
Syed Ashraf then said Debapriya Bhattacharya, who presented a budget analysis on behalf of CPD, “has no right” to do so under the banner of the think tank.
“Usually, the CPD chief executive makes such remarks after every budget. It’s not Debpriya, but Mustafizur Rahman, who is the chief executive of the organisation. Debapriya is its former chief executive, so he has no right to deliver such comments on behalf of CPD.”
