Islam can’t be established through violence: Matia

Update : 08 Jun 2013, 04:26 PM

Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury on Saturday said those who set ablaze the copies of holy Quran and prayer mats and logged huge trees across the country cannot establish Islam.

“The country’s people are more conscious now ….it’s not possible to fool them anymore,” she told a function at Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur public hall room.

The function was arranged for distribution of grants, given by different ministries, among various institutions and people here.

Deputy Commissioner of the district Mohammad Zakir Hossain, general secretary of upazila Awami League Moksedur Rahman Lebu and others spoke at the programme held with UNO M Abed Ali Mia in the chair.

Referring to opposition leader Khaleda Zia, Matia said: “She [Khaleda] doesn’t say anything for the trial of the killers of her husband Ziaur Rahman though a case in this regard is now pending with a Chittagong court. Khaleda Zia had also availed herself of various illegal facilities, including the cantonment residence, from HM Ershad during the latter’s rule though she termed Ershad as Zia’s killer”.

“Khaleda Zia doesn’t visit the killing spot of Zia except inaugurating a museum there. Her son Tarique didn’t see the body of his father. Questions about the matters have arisen in public mind,” the minister said.

Apparently referring to Tarique Rahman, Matia said if he wants to enter politics, he has to give answer to the questions before that. “He must answer to the questions who had killed Ziaur Rahman and why they killed him and why its trial was not held.”

Deriding at Khelada Zia for her party’s friendly relations with Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefajat-e-Islam, Matia said she [Khaleda] has become an ally of Jamaat and Hefazat though she had not made any contribution to the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque while she was in power.

“Soon after assuming power, Sheikh Hasina took up different programmes for the development of the national mosque and its facelift,” claimed the Agriculture Minister.
