Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu at a roundtable on Saturday said the present government has ensured full freedom of mass media as it believes in freedom of press.
Sheikh Russel Memorial Social Welfare Organisation arranged the roundtable at Chittagong Circuit House’s auditorium in the port city.
Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta, lawmaker Moinuddin Khan Badal and the organisation’s secretary general Syed Razia Mostafa, among others, spoke.
About the shutdown of two private television channels, including Diganta Television, Hasanul Huq Inu said the government temporarily stopped the transmission of the two channels for instigating violence in a critical period.
He affirmed that the government did not halt the transmission of both the channels for expressing different views or taking anti-government stance.
Inu, however, said “Show cause notices were issued to the channels. They [the channels’ authorities] have given replies to the notices. Positive decision will be taken after investigation, if the replies are deemed satisfactory.” Accusing a section of media of engaging in yellow journalism, he urged all to put an end to yellow journalism.
