The BNP on Friday afternoon started its previously announced mass procession as part of its movement to unseat the Awami League government.
The protest started after recitations from the Holy Quran before the BNP office at Naya Paltan and ended at Moghbazar Mor, where BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy was scheduled to give a speech.
Earlier in the day, BNP leaders and activists with banners in their hands took up positions in the area to join the demonstration.
Just before the procession started, BNP Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain spoke to rouse the crowd. He also announced the second part of the protest program at the time.
“A four-hour sit-in protest will be held in front of the party office at Naya Paltan from 10am to 2pm on January 11,” he said.
The BNP and dozens of other like-minded political parties went for the movement in the capital to push for their 10 demands, including the resignation of the government, dissolution of parliament, transfer of power to a non-partisan caretaker government and formation of a new election commission.
