Update : 29 May 2013, 01:22 AM

Hefazat-e-Islam secretary general Junaid Babunagri, arrested on May 6, was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Birdem Hospital here on Tuesday evening, reports UNB.

Hospital sources said Babunagri was shifted to the ICU as his condition deteriorated following a leg surgery on Tuesday afternoon.

Babunagri, who was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from Lalbagh Shahi Mosque in the capital on May 6, was sent to jail on May 21 after he made a confessional statement before a magistrate of Dhaka CMM court disclosing that activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir tried to use the party's May 5 Shapla Chattar rally for ousting the government.

A DB official, requesting anonymity, said Babunagri was admitted to the hospital four days back for proper treatment as he has been suffering from various diseases, including diabetes.

A total of 25 cases were filed with Paltan and Motijheel police stations over the violence during the May 5 Dhaka siege programme of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh.

Babunagri was made accused in five of the cases, including the police killing case.

He was placed on a nine-day police remand on May 7 in two of the cases, including police SI Shahjahan killing. The remand over, the Hefazat leader was taken on another 22-day police remand in three cases on May 16.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka city unit of Hefazat has accused the government of present physical condition of Babunagri. In a press release, Hefazat’s Dhaka city unit said Babunagr’s physical condition was perfect when he was arrested. But, due to severe torture on Babunagri in the custody, he is now fighting for life, the press release added.
