The main opposition BNP has finalised party`s mayoral candidate for Sylhet City Corporation election after a long-time meeting with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for fixing a choice between four bigwigs.
Among the four mayoral candidates, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, a central body member of the party got the nomination.
BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia gave her final nod while holding an hour-long meeting with the mayoral aspirants, at the chairperson’s political office at Gulshan in the capital on Thursday night.
Party sources said Begum Khaleda Zia asked the other candidates to withdraw their nomination papers from the election commission immediately and provide necessary assistance to Ariful.
Though BNP is going to no election officially under the incumbent government, but the party chairperson desires to see the victory of the party candidates in the local body elections.
She asked all party men to work hard and unitedly forgetting all previous conflicts in order to make sure the victory of Ariful in the SCC polls, the source added.
“We are all now united and committed for the victory of the party nominated candidate,” Ali Ahmed, the organizing secretary of Sylhet district unit of BNP, told Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier, Awami League finalised the recently resigned Mayor, Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, as the single candidate of the alliance.
