A case has been filed against leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in connection with Tuesday’s clashes with members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the DU campus.
Zahidul Islam, president of Muhammad Shahidullah Hall unit Chhatra League, filed the case on Friday night with Shahbag police station against 17 named and 50-60 unnamed leaders and activists of JCD.
Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moudut Hawlader told the media that Sub-Inspector (SI) Al Amin has been assigned to investigate the case.
According to case dockets, the JCD leaders and activists, including its general secretary, attacked the general students and BCL men with sticks and iron rods with the intent to kill.
At least eight students were severely injured in the attack reportedly carried out by JCD.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Dhaka University authorities (DU) also filed a case with Shahbagh police station against three to four hundred anonymous people over the same incident.
According to the case statement, a group of miscreants with sticks, rods, and various types of local weapons formed a gathering in front of the Dhaka Medical's outdoor amid elections to elect 35 teachers' representatives for DU senate on the campus.
At one stage, they started disrupting the election as well as the peaceful academic atmosphere prevailing at the university, it added.
On Thursday, another clash erupted between the leaders and activists of Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal (JCD) again on DU campus.
Tensions have been high between the student wings of Bangladesh’s two major political parties for the last few days over a remark on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by a JCD leader.
