Accusing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of making contradictory remarks, BNP stalwart MK Anwar yesterday said the 18-party alliance would not participate in the next general elections unless the caretaker government system is restored.
“The Prime Minister speaks of one thing in the morning and another in the afternoon. She herself called for talks to resolve the crisis. But now she is opposing it,” he said.
The BNP standing committee member was addressing a preparatory meeting of local BNP and its front organisations at his residence in Ramna marking the death anniversary of late President Ziaur Rahman.
Observing that the government wants to hold the polls using its muscle power ignoring people’s opinions, MK Anwar urged it to accept their demand for restoring the caretaker government system.
He alleged that the government has gone completely mad over money and power, “The government is harassing BNP leaders by filing false cases against them. Central leaders are being tortured in the name of remand while they are rearrested at the jail gate upon their release from the jail.”
Describing unprecedented “the heinous mass killing” of the Hefazat men at Shapla Chattar after disconnecting power supply on May 5, the BNP policymaker demanded that the government reveal how many Hefazat workers were killed on the day.
