At least 15 people, including two women, were injured in a violent clash between activists of Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the remote Nekjanpur village of the district’s sadar upazila on Wednesday morning, concerning previous feuds.
According to police and witnesses, Alokbali union AL leader Abdul Matin along with 100 hired men attacked activists of BNP, Akramul Islam, Shamir and Kaiyum Mia with lethal weapons. Family members of Akramul and Kaiyum, upon hearing the news, went to the scene and tried to resist the attacks but failed.
On receiving information, local police with the help of riot police rushed to the spot and brought the agitated situation under control.
The clash left around 15 people injured from both the groups, including two women. Some of the injured – Mokbul Hossain, Mahmuda Begum, Swapan, Kabir Hossain, Matin Member, Ripon Mia, Rafiqul Islam and Hasian Begum were admitted to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Among the injured, doctors referred Mokbul Hossain to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition and the rest were released after primary treatment.
On the issue, BNP leader Akramul alleged that activists of AL has previously attacked houses of BNP leaders and activists at least eight to nine times. They have killed at least three BNP leaders and almost 200 people have been, till now, injured by the AL activists. He further said they have torched several hundred houses and looted valuables and cash worth taka millions.
However, AL leader Siddique did not agree to meet when contacted regarding the incident. No case was filed until this report was submitted.
