MP Ekram slammed for comments on Obaidul Quader

Leaders of Companiganj unit AL terms the comments ‘baseless and tasteless’

The ruling Awami League’s Companiganj upazila unit has heavily criticized Noakhali 4 lawmaker Ekramul Karim Chowdhury for his “baseless and tasteless” comments regarding party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader. 

In a statement on Friday, President of the unit Iskander Haider Chowdhury Babul and General Secretary Md Yunus called for legal actions against Ekram. 

On Thursday morning, the MP went live on Facebook and criticized Obaidul Quader, his brother Quader Mirza and several other senior politicians of Noakhali for nepotism and creating division in the party.

Saying that Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, was “a disgusting man”, Ekram added: “Awami League will have a hard time recovering from the damage you have inflicted on Bangladesh and Awami League itself.”

He mentioned that the prime minister and party chief had asked Quader to remain quiet. “Apart from a few opportunists, you are a disgusting person to most of the people,” he lashed out. 

The lawmaker further accused that the minister had set his younger brother Quader Mirza, the mayor of Basurhat Municipality, against him, and alleged that Quader Mirza had taken crores of taka from him.

“Companiganj Awami League strongly condemns the matter and demands legal action against Ekramul Karim Chowdhury,” said the statement issued on Friday. 

Responding to queries on the matter, Iskander Haider said: “Freedom Fighter Obaidul Quader is the only guardian of Noakhali Awami League… he is a trusted vanguard of Sheikh Hasina.
