Detective Branch (DB) of police on Wednesday morning picked up BNP joint secretary general Barkatullah Bulu from in front of the party’s Nayapaltan office.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, DMP deputy commissioner (Media and Publications) Masudur Rahman said: "Bulu was held at around 11:20am, soon after the press conference."
However, he could not disclose any particular reason behind the detention.
Sources said Bulu was taken away from the party office in a microbus.
Earlier in the day, BNP-led 18-party alliance called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for May 19, protesting the "undemocratic practices" by the government.
The alliance also demanded resignation of the government and restoration of caretaker government system.
