‘BNP-Jamaat for making constitutional bodies questionable’

The Awami League to welcome the new Election Commission as it is a constitutional body, Bahauddin says

Update : 23 Feb 2022, 09:57 PM

The BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islam’s key work is to make the constitutional bodies questionable, says Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim.

He alleged that the alliance never wants the country's development to continue and hence opposes all development works.

He made the remark while speaking at a meeting with Awami League leaders of Barisal division at the party president's political office in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on Wednesday.

Bahauddin Nasim said the ruling party will welcome the new Election Commission (EC), which will be formed as per the recommendations of the search committee constituted by the president, as the Awami League thinks that the EC is a constitutional body.

"And all should keep confidence in it (the EC)," he added.

He said the country's people and the AL will accept the new EC since the president will appoint the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other election commissioners following the constitutional procedures.

The AL joint general secretary said the election is the key for continuation of the country's democracy and the EC is needed for holding the elections.

About the outcomes of Wednesday’s meeting, he said AL President Sheikh Hasina has directed to rearrange the district, upazila and union units of AL and hold conferences within next three months.

"We will communicate with the district units of AL," he added.

He said the conferences of four distruct units of AL in Barisal division are yet to be held. Extended meetings of the AL will be arranged in Pirojpur and Barguna before March 7 next, Nasim said.
