Mayors of Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Barisal resign

Mayors of Khulna and Sylhet city corporations resigned yesterday for contesting in the next mayoral elections. 

The KCC Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khalek tendered his resignation paper to the LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam, KCC Chief Executive officer Tapan Kumar Ghosh said.

According to Election Commission circular released on May 6, a person cannot contest for the mayoral post whilst holding that position. The person has to resign before filling his nomination paper.

Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, the incumbent Mayor of Sylhet city corporation resigned from his position on the eve of the mayoral poll.

`I sent my resignation letter to the concern authority and it is now awaiting the approval, said Kamran on Friday morning.

In spite of resignation Kamran was seen to use the vehicle of Mayor yesterday. `Until the approval of the Ministry of local government I would have to play as a Mayor’, he said.

Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran has been performing as a Mayor since the beginning of the corporation on 2002.

The mayoral elections are scheduled to be held on June 15.
