The Election Commission has planned to hold the newly formed Gazipur City Corporation election on June 22.
Md Shah Newaz election commissioner at the Election Commission (EC) said the commission would announce the city corporation polls schedule next week.
The EC is also preparing to hold the Dhaka City Corporations (Dhaka South and Dhaka North) elections on June 22 if by then the High Court moratorium on the DCC elections is over.
The National Identity Card Division will send the voters list of the Gazipur City Corporation to the EC secretariat on May 9.
After getting the voters list, the EC will forward it to the district election office for scrutiny followed by the announcement of the polls schedule.
On January 7, the government formed the Gazipur City Corporation, which is the country’s 11th city corporation. The city corporation elections must be held by July 15 according to city corporation laws.
About the DCC elections, Shah Newaz said the commission would also announce the polls schedule of DCC south and DCC North city corporations after the moratorium order is quashed.
According to the EC, it has prepared the voters list of these three city corporations.
The EC has a plan to hold three city corporation elections using the updated voters list. The local government ministry has completed the delimitation of these three city corporations.
The split DCC elections were supposed to be held on May 24 last year, but they were cancelled following the HC’s three months stay order on DCC polls in the wake of the complexity of voters list and the delimitation of certain areas.
