Update : 07 May 2013, 06:54 AM

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has filed a total of 12 cases against Hefazat-e-Islam in connection with Sunday’s violence in the capital.

Seven cases were filed with Paltan Police Station while the remaining five with Motijheel Police Station.

Officers in charge of the two police stations confirmed the filing of the cases to Dhaka Tribune.

Chittagong-based Islamist outfit Hefazat-e-Islam collided heavily with law enforcers in and outside the capital on Sunday and Monday following their much-hyped “Dhaka Siege” programme.

At least 21 people including law enforcers were killed in the violence.

The Hefazat activists vandalised and torched a lot of vehicles and roadside shops in the capital’s Paltan and Baitul Mokarram area.

They also vandalised and set fire to the office of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, the House Building Finance Corporation, Baitul Mokarram Market and the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
