Home Minister MK Alamgir said acts of vandalism are being carried out by the members of Jamaat-e-Islami who infiltrated the Hefazat processions.
But the situation is under control now and permission for the Hefazatrally at ShaplaChattar will remain in force, he added.
The minister made the comments to journalists at the Secretariat in his reaction to the Islamist outfit’s rally this afternoon and clashes that occurred preceding it.
Clashes, chases and counter-chases between Hefazat-e-Islam and Jamaat-Shibir activists and the security personnel have been reported at different points of the city as the former began its Dhaka-siege programme earlier this morning.
A violent clash erupted when a group of Jamaat-Shibir men were reportedly headed for Motijheel from the North gate of BaitulMukarramcarrying sticks. Police intercepted them and, as they tried to forge on, threw teargas shells and hand grenades in their direction.
