Update : 27 Apr 2013, 09:58 AM

Leftist parties have threatened to enforce nationwide hartal for May 2 if its 9-point demand, including the arrest of the owners of Rana Plaza in Savar and the garment factories, are not met by Sunday.

The announcement came from a press briefing in the capital on Saturday jointly organised by the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and BangladesherSamajtantrik Dal (BSD).

Terming the loss of lives in the Savar building collapse as ‘genocide’, the two parties have also announced demonstration programmes for April 28, 29 and 30 around the country.

CPB General Secretary Syed Zafar Ahmed placed a 10-point demand including enhancing workplace safety for workers.

CPB and BSD have also demanded substantial compensation for the dead workers and rehabilitation arrangements for the injured ones.

At the press briefing, the two parties also demanded the home minister’s resignation.

In a separate briefing, GanatantrikBaamMorcha, a platform of a number of other leftist parties, also announced similar programmes.
