The 36-hour countrywide hartal, called by opposition BNP- led 18-party alliance in response to the denial of bail for seven senior BNP leaders including its acting secretary general, is underway for the second consecutive day on Wednesday.
In the early hours of the hartal, BNP leaders and activists gathered at the party central office in Nayapaltan.
Our correspondent reports more than 20 cocktails have reportedly gone off in different parts of the capital during early hours of the hartal.
Pro-hartal pickets have also reportedly torched at least three vehicles in different places.
Since morning, opposition men brought out processions in support of the hartal in several parts of the capital. Police have arrested two from the capital’s Gulshan area on charges of vandalism.
Three police constables sustained injuries as picketers hurled cocktails on them in city’s Kamrangirchar area in the morning.
Around 7:30am, two cocktails were hurled at police from a procession in Shahjadpur Batar Gali in the capital’s Badda area. Nobody was injured in the attack.
At least four hand-made bombs exploded at Mohakhali, three at Uttar Badda, two at Bijoy Saranee and one in Banani.
BNP’s youth front Jubo Dal men allegedly blasted at least 10 hand-made bombs from a procession in the capital’s Banasree.
In Mohakhali, two CNG-run autorickshaws were torched in front of the Brac University. In Jatrabari, pickets set fire to a human hauler.
Hartal supporters blockaded a road near Mirpur Share Agaro by torching tyres.
Jamaat-e-Islami brought processions in the capital’s Tejgaon and Narinda area in the morning.
BNP’s volunteers front Swechchhasebak Dal brought out a process in support of the hartal in Mirpur and Pallabi at around 7am.
Shramik Dal, BNP’s labour front, brought out a procession in Mirpur at around 7:30am.
