Ruling Awami League has suspended all types of programs of the party -- both political and organizational -- due to the worsening Covid-19 situation.

The party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader made the announcement during a regular press briefing at his house in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.

“Now the only program we will pursue is standing by the helpless people,” he said.

"Lockdown is not necessary if people wear masks and follow hygiene rules properly. And lockdown is meaningless if you show indifference and don’t follow the rules,” added Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister.

He also said that wearing facemasks properly was the easiest and major protection against getting infected by Covid-19. “This disease has now spread to the villages. Many had thought that the rural people won’t be affected by Covid-19. They have been proven wrong.”

He urged all political parties, social and volunteer organizations to conduct campaigns to raise awareness against Covid-19.

Quader also called upon all Awami League leaders and activists to continue to stand by the helpless and the destitute and help them amid the Covid-19 crisis and during the Eid-ul-Azha.

The senior Awami League leader also urged the solvent and rich representatives of the party to extend a helping hand to the helpless and poor activists of the party.
