Police dispersed a procession of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), brought out in support of the 36-hour hartal called by the 18-party alliance for tomorrow, in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters.
The opposition party’s student wing JCD brought out the procession at around 11:45am.
Police shot tear shells to disperse the activists and brought the situation under control.
Later, the demonstrators vandalised a number of vehicles in the area.
The nationwide 36-hour hartal from 6am Tuesday to 6pm Wednesday was called in response to the denial of bail for seven senior BNP leaders including its acting secretary general on Sunday.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was among those denied bail.
The alliance will also hold demonstrations in every district headquarter including Dhaka on April 27.
The programme was announced after a meeting of secretary generals of the BNP-led 18-party alliance held at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital.
