18-party sit-in at Naya Paltan

Update : 18 Apr 2013, 08:28 AM

Vehicles movement remains stopped from Fakirapul intersection to Kakrail intersection for the sit-in program staged by BNP-led 18-party alliance in front of BNP party office at Nayapaltan.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance is set to stage a sit-in at 3pm in front of BNP’s Naya Paltan office Thursday.

The sit-in is staged for pressing the government to disclose the location of the missing BNP leader M Ilias Ali, demanding the unconditional release of detained opposition leaders and for the restoration of the caretaker system for holding a free and fair election.

BNP’s organising secretary M Ilias Ali has been missing since April last year. The main opposition party has since been accusing the government of abducting him.

Top central leaders of the party are scheduled to take part in the sit-in programme.

BNP standing committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain announced today’s sit-in programme on April 16 after a secretary general level meeting of the alliance at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police have given the opposition permission to hold the programme on the condition that it be peaceful.

Leaders and activists keep flocking into the program.

A huge number of members of law enforcement  were deployed around the venue and adjacent area.
